Our blackout lining is a specially coated, thick-woven fabric, produced specifically to block incoming light to a considerable degree. Since heat is associated with light, it also blocks heat transmission which is of great help during summer to keep the home’s interiors cool. In winter, it reduces energy spendings on your boiler and heating system as it reduces the loss of thermal energy through the windows considerably. The thick weave of the fabric also helps to muffle sounds, making your drapery capable of blocking out shrill external noises substantially. In short, blackout lining helps the drapery to block light, heat and sound substantially.
Our blackout linings come in three colours - white, beige and grey - offering clients plenty of bandwidth to appease any decor style, especially if the rear side of the window treatment will be visible to an adjoining room or an outdoor living area. The white lining toes in line with the bright and airy aesthetics of casual spaces and decor styles like farmhouse, coastal and Scandinavian, and comes across as a privacy lining at first glance due to its colour. The beige lining is preferred for warm-coloured face fabrics and the grey lining for cool-coloured face fabrics for better colour coordination. Overall, the blackout linings offer three neutral options that are incredibly versatile and can be teamed with all the drapery fabrics in our collection.
Before we move on, we must mention that although the blackout lining is quite effective at blocking light, it is not 100% light-blocking. During brightest hours, daylight may diffuse through the lining of curtains and be visible like a soft glow on the frontage. There also are other factors beyond just the lining itself that play a role in how well-contained light leaks can be. We recommend reading our Drapery Measurement Guide for detailed guidance, but to make your measuring tape a little friendlier, here are a few quick tips:
- All prices on our site are per single curtain panel. Therefore, please specify sizes for single panels in your order. To purchase a pair, please select a quantity of two when checking out.
- We do not require the measurements of your window, frame, pole, or track. Please provide the exact finished dimensions you would like for your curtain panels.
- For non-pinch, ‘hand-gathered’ styles of drapes - such as grommet tops or flat panel tops - we suggest 2x fullness for your curtains. This means the total width of your drapery should be double the length of your pole, to allow your drapery to gather into rich pleats. As an example, if your pole measures 60 inches, we recommend purchasing ‘two’ 60-inch panels or one 120-inch panel to ensure a rich, full look.
- Pinch pleat panels come with fullness ‘pre-stitched’ into their headers. For these styles, we recommend adding an additional 8-12 inches to your measurements to account for side returns (if applicable) and center-overlap. For instance, if your pole measures 60 inches, we suggest ordering a single pinch pleat panel of 65-70 inches or two panels of 32-35 inches each for optimal coverage and fullness. This measure can vary based on the type of hardware used.
- Most fabric bolts come in standard widths of 54 inches. Therefore, non-pinch drapes measuring more than 48 inches width, and pinch pleated drapes measuring more than 22 inches will likely have vertical seams to achieve the required width.

Of note:
- Since every product at Sewn is handstitched to bespoke specifications, our products are not eligible for returns, refunds, exchange or cancellations by default.
- Image colors can vary based on individual screen settings, so we highly recommend ordering fabric swatches before placing an order for window treatments. We do not accept returns or refunds based on feedback on color variation between site images and actual fabrics, especially if samples are not ordered in advance.
- Our roman shades include all necessary mounting hardware, but we rely on clients to ensure compatibility of our hardware with their space. We do not accept returns based on hardware-compatibility related issues.
- For inside-mounted shades, we deduct 10mm from the width specified in the order to ensure a proper fit inside a window recess, and to prevent the shade from rubbing and fraying against surfaces. Returns are not accepted on account of this industry-standard deduction on our part.
- On rare occasions, where we may have made a mistake, we do accept returns on a case-by-case basis, provided any discrepancy is communicated via email within five business days of delivery.
- In case of a cancellation, we issue a 100% refund only if the cancellation request is received before any work has started. If production has started, only the remaining value of the order after deducting costs incurred up to that point can be refunded. Once an order is ready, cancellations for refunds are no longer possible.
