In this blog, we share our top tips—from fabric recommendations to safety measures—to assist you in all your design decisions ahead:

Let There Be ‘No’ Light: Choose Blackout Roman Shades

Fabric and lining are the most important details of a sleep-friendly roman shade. It is at this stage that you set it up for success as a strong insulator against light and noise. So, whether you pick a cotton or linen for its hypoallergenic attributes or velvet for its insulating capacity, don’t skip the step of adding blackout lining. That said, blackout lining is not the only factor that contributes to room-darkening; there are steps to be taken to make the most of its insulation, which you can explore in our blog on Sewn’s Lining Options. Also, if you want to leave the shade unlined for some reason, pick a blackout/dimout fabric for your curtains to start.

Blackout fabrics, be it the front fabric or the lining, are specially engineered with multiple layers and thermal coating to block light and sound. In addition, they also insulate the indoors from external weather conditions, making it easy to maintain the desired room temperature, no matter the season. To sum up the deal: Your baby gets a quiet, dark cocoon to sleep in, with no cold drafts interfering with naptime or rude awakenings from your vacuum’s roar. Plus, you can reduce your energy consumption by about 30%, which will reflect in your bills and ease the climate crisis. Now, this is what we call a total win-win situation: baby sleeps, you sigh in relief, and the earth breathes!

Foolproof your Blackout Plan: Measure and Mount Correctly

Blackout goals call for more than just fabric decisions; sizing and mounting play a critical role, too. Roman shades can be mounted in two ways: snugly fitted inside the window frame/recess or affixed outside the window frame. Each of these positions has its perks to offer and related trade-offs to consider. A deep-dive comparison can help you to decide the mounting position, so we refer you to our blog on Inside Mount Vs Outside Mount Roman Shades

As regards the blackout agenda, here’s what we recommend: an outside-mounted shade with extended coverage. For this, mount the roman shade above the window, and extend it by roughly 6-8 inches beyond the window trim on all sides, so the light leaks on the edges may be minimized.

However, if you prefer inside mounting or don’t have a wall surround to mount the shade outside the window, here’s what you can do. Be millimeter-precise when measuring, so the shade sits flush with the window frame when mounted. This will dim the glow around the shade’s silhouette. In addition, you can layer curtains in front of your shades or install narrow framing panels to contain the light leaks from the shades’ edges.

TIP IN A PIC!

Be Mindful of the Recess Space Available

Hardware for Sewn’s roman shades needs a minimum of two inches of flat, drillable surface to be mounted securely. If your window frame/recess is too shallow and does not offer this, inside-mounting a shade will not be viable. In these settings, outside-mounted shades become your default saviors.

Tailor to Taste: Choose the Right Fold Style

Sewn offers its roman shades in three stylish fold styles capable of complementing various kinds of interiors. You can read about the unique offerings of each style in our detailed Roman Shades Fold Style Guide. While each style is wonderful on its own, which one will best suit your nursery or kids’ room is a matter for consideration. Come along, as we break it down:

Flat Fold Roman Shades with Back Slats feature clean, even folds and a straight hemmed bottom. Although they are supported by slats at the back, they betray no sign of their presence on the front because they are affixed to the lining. Given the clean, seamless frontage offered by this style, we recommend it for patterned fabrics, as it assures a distortionless presentation of the motifs.

Plain Fold Roman Shades with Front Slats also break into straight, even folds and feature a straight bottom. But they show the raised silhouettes of their slats on the frontage, a feature that brings an architectural quality to shades in plain fabrics, that may otherwise look too vanilla.

Both the flat fold styles are ideal for nurseries and kids’ rooms where roman shades are the standalone window treatment. Since they are supported by slats, they break into tidy folds with ease, making their operation fuss-free.

European Relaxed Roman Shades have a slat-free construction that gives them their signature scalloped bottom and organically curved folds. Their soft contours bring a dreamy charm to children’s spaces. However, since shades of this style require a bit of manual setting of folds, they are best suited as stationary decorative shades where other window treatments, such as blinds or full-coverage custom curtains, fulfill the functional roles.

Based on how frequently you expect to operate your shades, the aesthetic you’re aiming for, and the fabric you pick, choose the most apt fold style for your roman shades.

Age-Proof your Shades: Be Wise with Palette, Pattern & Embellishments

Kids’ preferences change at lightning speed, and their ‘favorite’ color and theme will only last until the next exciting idea catches on. So, while your big heart wants to offer everything asked for under the sun, it will not be virtually possible to do that every time. But that doesn’t mean you do nothing at all to accommodate their choices. Here’s what you can do:

PALETTE: Neutral tones make lasting companions, blending seamlessly with evolving themes. However, if you wish to inject color, pick a tone that will lend itself to diverse palettes. So if a fiery red has your little one enraptured, opt for a pastel version, or restrict the fiery hue to a slim border trim or low-profile pattern — especially if you’re aiming to future-proof your nursery decor. When the obsession dies out, the shade will still be loved and hopefully be versatile enough to blend in with its ‘growing’ locale.

PATTERN: We are all for patterned roman shades when it comes to kids’ rooms and nurseries. Because they make the atmosphere playful, and their colors and motifs double up as informal teaching aids. However, take care to avoid extremely kiddie motifs like toon prints and superhero figures. Instead, go for colorful stripes or florals, for example, that they’ll continue to love well into their teens.

TRIM: Kids’ rooms are hardly complete without a hint of whimsy, so border trims have a special place here. Whether a contrasting ribbon or a row of pompoms, they work a quiet magic. Like a rainbow lights up the sky, roman shade trims bring a whimsical delight to a child’s window - just enough to spark wonder, and never overpowering the scene.

Safety First & Last: Adopt Measures for Kid-Proofing

While roman shades already do a good job of being kid-proof, there’s more to do to make them fully safe. To that end, we have two recommendations:

  • Install Child-Safety Anchors: We provide cord anchors in our hardware kit with all roman shades. We highly recommend affixing these anchors to fasten the pull cords. Not only will you avoid the danger of loose cords in your baby’s territory, but also ensure a neat, uncluttered look for your window.

  • Choose Child-Proof Trims: The temptation to finish your nursery roman shades with cutesy bauble trims is real. But foreseeing the dangers they pose for a baby who might try to mouth these amusing trinkets, we advise our clients who want to baby-proof the room to stick to ribbon trims that attach securely to the roman shade. If your kid has outgrown their mouthing stage, pick any trim that speaks to your style, of course.
