A Guide to Tab Top Curtains

Simple, charming and effortlessly relaxed, tab top curtains are easy to spot: a row of fabric loops sewn along the top of the panel slides straight onto the rod. There's no ornate pleating, no ritual of attaching pins and no click of gliding rings, just soft, unstructured folds and a homespun charm that pairs beautifully with woven textures and artisanal details. Tab curtains, as they're often called, have a slightly undone, lived-in quality that feels as easygoing as a Sunday morning, which is why they're so at home in cottages, coastal rooms, sunrooms and porches. So if this light, textural heading has caught your eye, read on for our stylists' favorite ways to use tab top drapes, plus what to know before you choose them.

Tab Top Curtains: A Snapshot of the Style

Tab top curtains are simple fabric panels with evenly spaced tabs sewn along the header—each tab 4 inches long and 2 inches wide, sewn from the same fabric as the drapery itself. If you'd like longer or shorter tabs, just let us know before you order. These fabric loops double up as accessories that fasten the panel to the rod and give a decorative twist to an otherwise simple curtain. When gathered on the rod, tab tops form soft, unstructured folds that add to their easygoing charm.

The fabric tabs eliminate the need for any additional hardware like rings and pins, but it is worth noting that they don’t promise an equally smooth glide. Therefore, tab top curtains are often stitched as short curtains or narrow panels, or made of lightweight fabrics to ease operation - since oversized, heavy curtains in this style may prove a bit difficult to glide on the daily.

Tab top curtains are sometimes mistaken for their close cousin, the hidden back tab curtains. While both styles use fabric loops, they are positioned differently—and therein lies all their distinction of how they appear and act. In tab tops, the fabric loops sit atop the top edge of the curtain panel - fully visible - giving them a laid-back, decorative finish. Whereas, in back tab tops, the tabs are behind the header, so the curtain appears less embellished and tailored, letting them blend into both formal and informal settings.

Like any heading style, tab top curtains have their own compelling traits that make them more suitable for certain settings. Besides their handcrafted charm and informal appeal, there’s a lot more to them than meets the eye. Here, we unpack their strengths - both seen and unseen - so you know how they can complement your home and the specific requirements of the room you are dressing:

INFORMAL, WHIMSICAL CHARM: Tab tops put the room at ease, much like a flowy sundress or well-worn linen shirt keeps you comfortable on a sunny day. Their gently gathered folds are all about everyday charm, not too structured or dressy. Usually sewn in homespun textures of cotton and linen, or the sun-drenched quaintness of a blissful sheer, tab tops make perfect suitors for casual areas of the home. Their spaced-out fabric tabs echo the same homely aesthetic of handwoven seaweed baskets, rattan furniture, and crocheted dreamcatchers, making them natural fits for rustic farmhouses, country cottages, coastal homes and carefree bohemian escapes.

EASY INSTALLATION: Mounting tab top curtains is as easy as it can get. There are no elaborate rituals of measuring, marking, and pinning—the curtains can slide onto the rod as soon as they are unboxed and steamed. This makes the job just as easy whenever you take them down and hang them again.

NO DRIFTING: While curtains hanging on rings or gliders often drift and gather together under the pressure of the wind, tab tops - thanks to their fabric loop construction - hold on to their position firmly. This makes the tab top style especially ideal for sheer and semi-sheer curtains that may otherwise drift too easily with other header constructions. Our sheers also have a chain weight sewn along the hem, so they hang straight on a breezy day.

PRIVACY WITHOUT BLOCKING LIGHT: Tab tops are relatively lenient at light control. The gaps between their fabric loops ensure that the room is not left starved for light and airflow even when the curtains are closed. The fabric, if lightweight and loose weave, further complements the cause of protecting privacy without shutting off the light completely. All in all, tab tops are masters at safeguarding privacy without depriving the interiors of light.

ELEVATING FOR BOTH PLAIN AND PATTERNED FABRICS: Plain curtains stand the risk of giving off an overly minimalist appeal, especially when designed in underwhelming heading styles. But, tab top panels offer a decorative touch and a woven texture in their fabric loops, making a plain curtain look anything but plain! In the case of patterned fabric, since the panel is not gathered into dense pleats, patterns get a continuous canvas to showcase their details without any visual distortion. So, whether you choose a plain or printed fabric, you can count on tab tops to hold their colors and motifs well.

Quiet beauty, breezy appeal and easy upkeep are the strengths of the tab top style that make them desirable in dressing outdoor living spaces, lazy lounges and rustic interiors. However, the same qualities make them less favorable or completely unsuitable for others. To judge better whether tab top curtains will suit your settings, it is good to check both sides of the coin. Before you commit to this heading style, consider these key factors—

NOT FOR EVERY DECOR STYLE: Tab tops give an easy-breezy makeover to any window in an instant. They add a refreshing charm to a kitchen patio, reading nook or window seat. Equally, they are out of place in dressier spaces like Victorian-inspired living rooms where exotic silks and embellished pleats set the scene. Nor do they match the austere tone of a modern minimalist condo where track-supported floor-to-ceiling drapes are a better match. So, if your decor style is ornate or extremely unadorned, other heading styles can deliver better on the mandate.

SLOW TO GLIDE: Tab top curtains don’t glide open at a slight tug like curtains hanging on rings, pins or grommets. The fabric loops are slower to glide and the curtains need to be operated with slightly more care and effort. Therefore, we do not recommend tab tops for large-sized, heavyweight curtains that you expect to operate on a regular basis. Instead, you may find them better suitors for curtains that are lightweight, small-sized or intended to be kept stationary for the most part.

NOT LIGHT BLOCKING: Tab top curtains let light pass through their headers. No matter how high above the window you hang them, you cannot expect a foolproof blackout due to their semi-open headers. So, when it comes to bedrooms, nurseries, and media rooms where room-darkening is key, tab tops are not the best choice. A lining still helps the panel itself: our white privacy lining softens the sun, and blackout lining, in white, pale gray or pale beige, darkens the fabric much further. For a truly dark room, pair them with a roman shade.

FABRIC CHOICE & FULLNESS LEVELS: Being envisioned for light-loving spaces and as semi-stationary panels, tab top curtains are typically dressed in light fabrics and breezy silhouettes. So, if it’s a heavy cotton or velvet drape that best defines your style, tab tops might need a pause and a second thought. Also, heavier fabrics don’t play well with the structure of tab tops, making it harder for the tabs to glide as the weight pulls them down. Similarly, if lush, dense pleats best align with your vision, tab tops may not fare well. Because if you add too much fullness, the tabs will bunch up on top, again restricting their free movement, and yielding a somewhat crowded look along the way.

RODS, NOT TRACKS: Tab tops are designed exclusively for rods, which means they are not compatible with curtain tracks. So, if you currently have tracks installed, you may need to switch to drapery rods. Or, head over to our Drapery Headings Style Guide to discover heading styles that pair beautifully with tracks.

VISIBILITY OF HARDWARE: Since the curtain rod is fully on display in this style, it must be chosen with care to align with your palette and decor style. If this is hard to achieve or if you’d rather keep the hardware concealed, we recommend considering other header styles that either cover the rod completely or give away not more than a sliver.

BRACKETS BREAK THE FLOW: Since the drapery rod is fed directly through the header’s tabs, tab top panels cannot slide past support brackets. So, for long rods supported by a central support bracket, a single draw curtain panel is not an option. Instead, opt for a pair of curtains that can operate on either side of the rod. Similarly, for extra-long rods supported by several support brackets, you will have to consider using multiple narrower panels instead.

Sizing Made Simple: Measuring for Tab Top Curtains

Selecting the most apt fabric and header style is a job only half done, because for curtains to reach their full aesthetic potential, they must also fit the window right. So, precision of measurement is key to a good finish, and tab tops are no exception. But, here’s the good part—the math is just as uncomplicated as the curtain style. When it’s time to start with your measuring tape, head over to our Drapery Measurement Guide, where we lead you through a step-by-step process with illustrations for easy grasping. But, before you head to the guide, below are a few key points to bear in mind when measuring for tab tops:

  • Fabric Loops and Final Length: Our tab top curtains come with 4-inch long tabs. The length of the tabs is included in the length of the drapery. So, the final length of the drapery will be exactly what you specify in the order, starting from top of the tabs to the bottom end of the panel. In practice, that means measuring from the top of the rod down to where you want the hem. Every panel has a 2-inch hem, and we make panels up to 252 inches long.

  • Measuring Width: Tab tops are usually envisioned to have a relatively flat, less full look than curtains of most other styles. Therefore, we recommend a width that measures 1.5x fullness, as opposed to the 2x fullness we suggest for most other styles. In a sheer, you can go up to 2x for a softer gather, but never beyond that, or the tabs bunch up and the curtain won't slide. Don’t worry if you’re not sure what ‘fullness’ means. Just head to our Drapery Measurement Guide now - where it is explained in detail with illustrations.

Hanging Made Hassle-Free: Installing Tab Top Curtains

Sheer linen tab top curtain on a branch-style rod

A light, billowy curtain hanging on soft fabric loops brings a fresh charm to any room. But, for the look to feel truly pulled together, the supporting cast also matters. Your hardware - especially the rod in this case - needs to support the casual flair of tab tops.

In case you’re still scouring for the apt drapery rod for tab tops, we especially recommend distressed wooden rods with handcrafted finials to offer organic, rustic accents, or wrought iron rods with hand-forged finials to contrast the drapery’s airy softness.

Whether you live in a rustic farmhouse, a bohemian cottage or a waterfront home, you can find a hardware finish that rhymes with your tab tops. And the good news is that once you’ve found your pick, there is nothing more you need - no pins, no clips, no eyelets or rings. Your drapery can go straight from the box to the rod in a simple two-step process explained below.

  • Feed the rod through the fabric tabs on the curtain’s header. Make sure you don’t miss any tabs. Gently gather the fabric and arrange the pleats for a neat finish.

  • Place the drapery rod into its brackets, tighten the screws, fasten the finials, and you’re done!

Tab Top Curtains: FAQs

What are tab curtains used for?

Mostly for relaxed rooms and for curtains that stay put, such as sheers, cafe curtains, framing panels and porch or sunroom curtains. The tabs hold the panel in place in a breeze and leave the rod on show as part of the look.

Are tab top curtains still in style?

Yes, especially in farmhouse, cottage, coastal and bohemian rooms. Choose natural linens, cottons or soft sheers and a wood or wrought iron rod to keep them looking fresh rather than dated.

How do you make tab top curtains slide more easily?

Choose a lighter fabric, keep the fullness at about 1.5x, and pick a smooth rod rather than a textured one. Wider panels on a long rod are harder to move, so a pair of narrower panels draws more easily.

Can tab top curtains be blackout?

The panel can be. Any of our tab tops can have blackout lining in white, pale gray or pale beige. Some light will still come through the gaps between the tabs, so add a roman shade if you need a fully dark room.

How long should tab top curtains be?

It depends on the room. Sill-length suits kitchens and small windows, while floor-length looks best in living rooms and on porches. Measure from the top of the rod, because the tabs are included in the length you order.

Are tab top curtains good for porches and pergolas?

Yes. They're a favorite for covered porches and pergolas, because the tabs keep the panels from drifting in the wind and the relaxed look suits outdoor living. Tie them back or leave them as stationary panels.

Can you use tab top curtains with a valance?

Yes. A pole-mounted valance on a double rod works well over tab tops, or you can hang a short tab top valance on its own for a simple, casual finish at a kitchen or bathroom window.
